Mitchell Beer

Mitchell Beer is the founder and publisher of The Energy Mix, a non-profit news site focused on practical developments in energy, technology, and local economic shifts. His most recent engagement with Estevan was through a community profile he produced for the Institute for Research on Public Policy’s Community Transformations Project.

Mitchell has been involved in the energy sector since 1977, with a background that includes renewable energy, energy efficiency, and community-level economic resilience. In 2019, he delivered a TEDx Talk about how to build productive conversations across different perspectives on energy and the environment—especially in communities where the future of resource industries is top of mind.

One of his proudest moments was building a model wind turbine out of stir sticks with his then-11-year-old daughter. Outside of his energy work, he’s a big fan of improv comedy and believes listening is one of the most underrated skills in leadership and community development. His work has been recognized with Canada’s Clean50 Lifetime Achievement Award and the King Charles III Coronation Medal—for contributions to inclusive, forward-thinking energy solutions that aim to bring everyone along for the journey.
